Here is a San Francisco travel tip. Don’t come in July (or early August). The photo above depicts the weather you get! It has been like this the entire month of July. Fog and cold until lunch or early afternoon, then sun for a few hours, then back to fog and cold. Not the best time for a summer vacation.
During this time of year everyone repeats the controversial Mark Twain quote (controversial because people dispute that it has been misattributed to Mr. Twain): “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.”
Whether he said it or not, it is true…it’s damn cold here right now!
The best time to visit San Francisco? September and October. Hands down the most beautiful time of year.
Or …. May, June, July and all of August! Really mid-September and October are the best times to hit SF. We have had the worse summers the past couple of years, foggy, cold and damp.
I was just there a few days ago and I have to agree. Honestly? It’s colder than Seattle! If it makes you feel any better, the entire coast is freezing (SF to Portland OR).
@Jackie, I was up in the San Juan Islands for 4th of July and the weather was better than SF also!
@ChezUS, totally agree Sept and Oct are so beautiful in SF. Funny thing is it is so beautiful in a lot of places and always end up traveling in those months so I miss out on a lot of the good weather!

Well, right now it’s hot and humid and nasty in NYC, so your weather sounds great to me. I’m not a huge fan of being hot!
The grass is always greener. Not sure if Mark Twain coined that one.
@Julie, nope Mark Twain didn’t or least that is what historians say…that’s the controversial part because it is constantly repeated by everybody in the Bay Area. I will take SF weather over NY weather any day!
well, but could you right-coast folks please send us just a few degrees–say, maybe 10 or so ?
This is VERY good to know because hubby and I were thinking of going to SF this summer (not enough vacation time for me, alas) but I’ve heard that Fall is actually the best time. Glad to know you confirm!
