I was first made aware of Speck when my Blissdom ’09 blogging bud Paula of Booger and Burps did a promotion with them and offered her readers a 25% discount on all their products. I bought a SeeThru Hard cover for my MacBook (in RED of course!); a cover for my husband’s MacBook Pro and a case for his iPhone.
Paula loves her Speck orange SeeThru cover too which has even made a jury duty appearance. For me, love is not a strong enough word to describe how I feel about their products.
So during CES when my colleague who I was working the show with said she used to work with the Speck gang at a previous company and wanted to make sure to stop by their booth, I was all for it. Turns out that of the 2700 exhibitors that we saw, and over the four days I worked the show we saw them all, Speck was my favorite!
The theme of their booth was a candy store/arcade and it looked fabulous! There were candy jars, and arcade games and vending machines, and as luck would have it, free beer just at the moment we were there! I got to meet my colleague’s friends, Owen and Brent, who were just the nicest guys, as it seems everyone at Speck is.
For me they are also a hometown team as they are located in the San Francisco Bay Area. They are a small company with great ideas and great marketing campaigns with precision execution, something I always enjoy observing.
I had a great time meeting them and others on the team, taking photos and checking out their products. I am in the market for a new laptop bag so I was keen to see what they had in their portfolio. It had only been a year since they launched this addition to their line and I wanted to see how they matched up to Timbuktu (another Bay Area company).
As we were leaving, Owen slipped me a new SeeThru Satin Case for my iPhone (in RED of course) and I was thrilled. I ripped off my old case and quickly put on my new cover, which I am totally in love with! It is beautiful and actually won a Best in Show Award at CES.
And now for its secret crime-stopping capabilities. Last Thursday while I was riding BART home, I was watching a TV show on my iPhone with my headphones on. When the train reached the 19th Street/Oakland stop (Richmond line) a guy in a grey hooded sweatshirt with the hood pulled over his face tried to grab the phone out of my hand as he walked by. He tugged, and I tugged back, hard (I had no plans to give up my phone).
I truly 100% believe that if had not been for my new case which has, and I quote from their website, “Raised rubberized trim [which] provides extra grip…” I would not have my phone today. My old case (not a Speck) was a smooth plastic and would have slipped out of my hands, but with the traction I got from the rubber on the Speck version, I was able to keep a firm hold.
And there you have it, a beautiful case from a friendly company with secret, magical powers. Can’t beat that!
Speck, you are truly sweeet!

That is so cool that the case helped you to prevent your phone being stolen! Talk about a great testimonial for the company…

Good grief! He tried to grab it? Be careful, Andi. We cna’t live without you. How cool – it doubles as a safety gadget!
I enjoyed looking through their website, some really cool features on their site. Thanks for linking. And Red is my favorite color too. I have a red phone, red computer and red mini-van.
