Misadventures with Andi reader survey results and how to do one yourself

by Andi on January 18, 2010

Thanks to everyone who completed my reader survey, I appreciate you taking the time to do that for me.  It is my goal to continually evolve this space here to ensure that you and I both have an exceptional experience.

I got good feedback and a couple of people asked if I would share some of the results as well as how I did the survey in the first place.  Blogging is a community event and I believe you improve by sharing and learning. It is my pleasure to share what I know when I know something.  I am continually learning myself and am grateful to others when they share.

So here are some of the highlights from my survey:

  • 96% of my readers are women (not unexpected) with 43% being between the ages of 25-40 and 52% are over 40.
  • Surprisingly 52% of the people that responded have only been reading Misadventures with Andi less than 3 months. It seems I have a lot of new readers, which is great, but I wonder where my readers from last year went?  30% having been reading this blog between 6-12 months and 17% have been reading for more than a year (thanks!).  I know it is the nature of the beast for people to come and go, thanks to those who have stuck with me and welcome all new readers, I am thrilled that you have chosen to visit me and that you took the time to respond.
  • 48% said they read me everyday – yay! I have set an expectation that I will blog everyday, and I am glad you come back to check me out on a daily basis. 35% said they come in few days which is wonderful as well.  But truly for those who only check me out on an infrequent basis, any visit is a GOOD visit – thanks!
  • Reasons for visiting, most people said “Entertaining stories” (74%) and “French culture comparisons and stories” (61%) that makes me feel good because that is the core of what I write about.
  • Of my weekly features, which include Music Memory Monday (not every week); Wordless Wednesday; French Friday and Saturday Six, the features that are the most liked are French Friday (76%) and Saturday Six (43%) – glad to hear it!
  • Of my weekly features that you don’t like Wordless Wednesday and Music Memory Monday were listed with both of them getting 38% of the responses. Also in the open comments area people commented on these two features the most.  I have pretty much run through my Music Memory Monday posts, although there maybe one or two that pop up when I hear a song from that past that sparks a memory I want to share.  Wordless Wednesday I use as a cheat to give myself a break in the middle of the week.  I totally get that it is a filler, and many times I can’t or don’t want to be wordless about it anyways, so I might change it to Wordful Wednesday or drop it completely unless I am really desperate due to illness, travel or a busy schedule.

P.S. Some of the percentages equal more than 100% because multiple options could be selected.

Those were the highlights, thanks again for assisting me in reviewing and improving my blog.

Now the How-To part.

> I used Google Docs to created the form.  If you have a Google account go to your Google Account page. If you don’t have an account, get one here.

> Click on the Docs link.

> Click on the Create New button and select “Form”

> Title your form and put an intro

> There is a sample test question already completed, you can play around with the different styles of questions by clicking on +Add Item.  You can edit your question, copy it if you just want to slightly adjust it, move its placement up or down, or even delete it.

> You can also select a theme to change the color/design of the form.  Just click on “Theme” towards the top.

> When you are satisfied with your questions, click on “Save”

> Once the page refreshes, you will see a link in blue text on a black background in the bottom of the form, this shows a link that is the link you will use in your copy to link to the form you have created.

> If you go back to your Google Docs page you will your new form listed.  If you click on the document, you will see a spreadsheet view of your results.  You should test out the form by answering the questions and just know to delete out the first line when looking at your final results.

> You will see your results in spreadsheet view. If you want to see the results in charts, click on “Form” and you will get a drop down menu, click on “Show summary of responses” and a new window will pop-up with the total results in pretty pictures and percentages.

Select Show summary of responses (not Accepting responses like it shows in the image)

And that’s how I did it!

Thanks for sharing both the results and the how to. It helps me learn how to think about the results and how to do a survey – now I just need to block in time to do it. Love to read ya!

I am one of your new readers who loves the French Fridays and stories. I also love using Google Docs to make forms and if I hadn’t discovered Survey Monkey, I would have made a form, too. I should be posting my reader results and comments next week.
