One week from today the DVD (and Blu-ray if you have one of those) for one of the best movies of the year is coming out! That’s right Julie & Julia releases next Tuesday, December 8th.
This movie has all the things I love: France, food, love and strong women! Or I guess I should say a strong woman and one woman who found a fantastic way of finding herself! And even though I couldn’t always relate to Julie (she kind of flipped out a little and got her priorities a little screwed up for a bit) there was a lot that I did appreciate about Julie.
Blogging is not easy and even though everyone says it doesn’t matter how many comments you get, each one is like a tiny little validation that someone else besides your husband appreciates what you have written. So I loved her honesty about that! She just got a little too sucked in and self-involved for my taste, although she did manage to turn herself around.
As someone who has not cooked much last in the last eight years, and has basically forgotten (!) I totally appreciate the enormous effort it took to cook Julia’s book cover-to-cover. It was an achievement!
But the best, best part of the film was Julie Childs, and Meryl Streep’s brilliant portrayal of her. As I mentioned before when I wrote about how France viewed Julia, I kind of wish the entire film was her story, because her life was fascinating! And of course I can relate to her love and fascination for France and French cooking.
She brought her love for the art of French cooking to the United States and made it possible for house wives every where to cook French meals.
The movie is adorable and I will be watching it more than once! I normally don’t watch many of the special features on DVD’s but I look forward to checking out some of the behind the scenes featurettes that are offered on the DVD. If you are lucky enough to have a Blu-ray player, or a PS3 which plays Blu-ray discs then you get a ton of bonus material. For instance you get:
- Julia’s Kitchen, a tour of Julia Child’s one-of-a-kind kitchen now housed at the Smithsonian Institution, which was custom built by her husband Paul Child to accommodate her 6’ 2” frame and to serve as a television sound-stage for her cooking shows
- Family & Friends Remember Julia Child which picks up where the film leaves off and chronicles her public life including other published works, her numerous television shows, her founding of the American Institute of Food and Wine, the many accolades she received, her philanthropy and her rarely discussed private life: the love story with her husband, her sense of humor, her amazing work ethic, her love of teaching and her passing in 2004
- Cooking Lessons with master chefs Julia Child, Jacques Pépin, Mark Peel, Suzanne Goin, Steven Lewandowski and Drew Nieporent demonstrating how to make such mouthwatering dishes as Braised Beef Short Ribs and Butter Poached Maine Lobster
Oh man! I swear between this release and Star Trek, I am seriously thinking of getting a player!
To celebrate the release and to kick-off my 17 days of Christmas I am giving away a copy of the DVD! To enter leave a comment telling me what your favorite French dish is or one you would like to try – either eating or making. For an extra entry tweet this post and leave me the url for your tweet. (Need help?)
You have until Tuesday, December 8 midnight PST to leave your comment.
Good luck and as Julia would say “Bon appetit!”

Absolutely loved the movie ! I would love to try beef bourguignon, both making and eating!
There’s so much I’d like to make AND EAT!
I’d like to try her recipes for green beans (or hericot verts), her Reine de Saba cake and yes, the beef bourguignon and coc au vin. I’m hungry just writing this.
Love this movie ……it’s what finally got me off my butt to start blogging!
Love too, what nice relationships with their hubby’s both J’s have …
French dish? I don’t know~how about steamed mussels in Vermouth?
I haven’t seen the movie but it sounds lovely.
A french dish I would like to have again is a real french crêpe. I am not a big fan of American pancakes
My favorite class French dish is Gigot de sept heures ( seven hours lamb leg ). Pure heaven is how I can put it into words.
I want to see this movie so badly. I loved Julia Child and watched every episode when she was on. This movie just looks too cute.
Loved the book and wondered how in the world they’d do the movie, but it worked! I hunger for more of Meryl as Julia and more of Julia’s story. Like Cheryl I like Gigot d’Agneau a la Sept Heures but I love Flamiche aux Poireaux (Leek Tart), leeks and gruyere with a little creme fraiche, you can’t go wrong!
I enjoyed this movie and Maryl Streep did a fabulous job of portraying Julia Child, I thought it was brilliant!
Smooches,

Okay, Andi, you forced me to finally sign up for a Twitter account. So I’m giving you this url, but I don’t know if this is what you want because I’ve never done this before.

I loved that movie, and can’t wait to see it again….!!
I have to say my favorite French dish is down home cooking style — a cassoulet. I end up making this dish a lot. My second favorite would have to be roast chicken with herbs de provence as the main seasoning.

Okay, is this the URL you want?

That’s so hard to pick one French dish that I would like more than an other! I would say anything with melted cheese and my top choice would be La Raclette.
And I am eating one tonight. Thais is turning 8 and she get to pick what she wants to eat: at home or at a restaurant and she wants to eat une raclette.
Have not seen the movie yet by the way. And just learned recently that Julia Child even existed.
I tweeted it http://twitter.com/lydiethomas
I love foie gras !!
And I’m so glad to eat foie gras each Christmas eve dinner ! And not only. Yes. haha.
I didn’t see this movie, but really, the trailer was very good ! =D
And I totally agree with you. Even if everyone say that comments don’t really matter… I’m so glad to read them. =)
I am so excited for pintade and roasted chestnuts
Maybe very traditional and classic, but it’s damn good and a nice change from turkey which, if you read my post thanksgiving entry, left me comatose on the couch after eating!
Retweeted it as well! http://bit.ly/5yuXJf
Or if that wasn’t the proper link: http://twitter.com/LostNCheeseland
for me something with chocolate, a “fondant au chocolat”?
Have not seen the movie as it came and left France in a matter of minutes!
I married a fabulous French cook and he made me the most divine Daube de Boeuf aux Carottes in the world! And I make a pretty mean Blanquette de Veau!
I am so dying to see this movie! It did come and go quite quickly here in the City of Light.
I would love to try my hand one day at the traditional French wedding cake – La piece montée. They are so gorgeous and I am a sucker for puff pastry, caramelized sugar and creme patissier. I saw Martha Steart make one years ago on one of her holiday shows determined that I would be able to follow along. I think my eyes glazed over when she pulled out her circular saw blade for one particular component!

Creme Brulee:) Lovely prize!! Thanks!

I have actually never tried to reproduce any French cuisine in my house. I guess I would like to try to make coq au vin, but do I really have to buy an old rooster?

tweet-a-leet!
Wow, how to pick just one? I’m married to a frenchman…and he doesn’t cook! Lucky for me, he likes everything I make. Cassoulet, Boullaibaise, Soupe au Pistou, etc.
Can’t wait for the movie to be out..It is a classic, just like Julia!
Real poached eggs. In the movie, it looked so easy. But I have yet to get it down.
My favorite french dish is: French Onion soup. Does that count? LOL Not even sure if it is French. Just know I love to cook it up and love to eat it even more. I am anxious to see this movie.
