Saturday Six #2

by Andi on November 14, 2009

6 Welcome back to Saturday Six! Last week was the inaugural edition, so check it out if you missed it. There is no shortage of wonderful posts that float through the internet on a weekly basis; I am sharing some of my favorites from this week. Ready?

[1] I’m a bookworm. Love reading, always have. One of the greatest joys along my journey as a blogger has been the opportunity to “meet” authors that I enjoy reading. I was chatting with Rebecca Elia this week over IM, yes archaic I know, but still works! We were discussing Flow which I blogged about on Tuesday. During that discussion I remarked on the fact that I never thought of authors as people until I started blogging and exchanging emails with several of them.

I definitely held published authors up on a pedestal and didn’t think that they got out of bed and drank coffee (or tea) like the rest of us.  It has been a wonderful revelation to me that they are approachable, friendly and usually a lot of fun.

And then there are the authors you get to meet in person, or sometimes stalk in person.

Jen Lancaster is my favorite humorist. Her books make me burst out in uncontrollable spurts of laughter, they are that funny. (My husband can attest to this.)  Jen is also a blogger. I got the chance to meet her this year at Blissdom and was thrilled! She is blogging less and less often, due to her schedule caused by the success of her books and to the simple fact that she is addicted to Twitter.

So when I see a post from Jennsylvania on my reader I am thrilled because I know it is going to be a good laugh. This past week she published two posts. The first was on fashion called My Entry.

My plan was to include that as one of my Saturday Six because I enjoyed it, but then she had to go and publish a second post that had me laughing so hard my husband wanted to know what was wrong with me!  Jen is a Twilight fan (she probably would join S.P.L.A.T. if she knew about it) and she wrote a post about a recent Target trip that resulted in a special Twilight purchase, I’ll let you read it for yourself, (Not) A Cry For Help is a must-read!

[2] This past week saw the passing of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and Sesame Street’s 40th anniversary.  My pal Jen of JenX67 wrote a wonderful essay titled 5 World Views Shaped by Sesame Street which I thoroughly enjoyed.   As usual Jen finds a humorous way to impart life lessons while evoking memories from Generation X phenomena.

[3] Delicate Flower over at Delicacies wrote a nice birthday tribute to her younger sister.  And although it was a birthday post, there was a “morale to the story” and that is: Age is Only a Number!

[4] Lucrecer over at Art Slam had a really nice meme this week called Without Thinking Too Much.  I met Lucrecer in an elevator at Blissdom when we exchanged cards and her creativity continues to inspire me!

[5] Now to more serious posts. Tanya of Parisian Spring, who used to live in Paris and then moved back to Washington, D.C., but who has recently moved to Brussels (whew!) wrote a post on the origins of the red poppies for Veterans (Armistice) Day.  Sadly, I never knew the history of why veterans sell these particular flowers every year.  But the story is quite interesting and the poem which inspired the selection of the poppy is quite beautiful.

On the same day, Jonathan of Cheese in Beans was reciting the same poem in his head (during a meeting, gasp) at The Eleventh Hour, of the Eleventh Day, of the Eleventh Month!  Jonathan has a lot of other things on his mind as he starts a 6-week project that has him living in a hotel during the week – hope everything goes well for you, Jonathan!

[6] Lastly, new blogging friend Laurie of You Must Take Your Chance wrote a wonderful little tribute called Meme’s Hollywood Rain for her Aunt Meme.  Meme sounded like a wonderful person and was laid to rest yesterday, probably in the rain.

As a bonus, I have to mention a post that I wanted to add last week, but spaced on.  Shelly of That Girl Blogs cracks me up, but she really had me rolling with her Christmas post.  I agree with her 100% on Undeck Your Halls, do you?

Got a favorite post you read somewhere this week? Please share!
