In August I blogged about a great children’s book I discovered called Human Body Detectives: The Lucky Escape by Dr. Heather Manley. I loved the audio and activity workbook and truly believe that there is no better way to teach children about their body. I gave that book to my niece because I felt that not only was it educational, but totally entertaining and I knew she would love it.
During the visit in which I gave her The Lucky Escape, my niece asked me if my germs were the same as hers? Ack. Not having kids, and not being a doctor, I had no clue what the answer was! I told her I thought our germs were similar because we were family, but that we also carry germs from other people we encounter, sometimes making us sick.
So thank goodness Dr. Manley’s second book is all about germs and the immune system, because now I can send her Battle with the Bugs and she can get more of her questions answered! This time Merrin and Pearl have an adventure with their cousins, one of which is sick. You can follow them from snot to finish (ok, I had to do that!) and learn a lot (at least I did)!
I loved the last book, I thoroughly enjoyed this one (yes, I listened to it all!) and I say, keep going! Bring on more, maybe even a book for girls about menstruation someday? [Sorry, I am still on my Flow kick.]
I wanted to do an interview with Heather, but my pal Paula from Boogers and Burps did such a great one with her, I felt I couldn’t do any better, so go visit her post to read more from Heather.
Dr. Manley is working to get her books into schools and has started to make head way. If you would like to see these books in your school, tell your school administration!

I’ve seen the first book and this one looks just as good. I applaud Dr. Heather for following her passion with this.
