On the plane home from Las Vegas yesterday I was flipping through TV channels (I love you Virgin America) when I stumbled across VH1 and some band singing a Beastie Boys song in tribute to them. I am not a rap fan, and was never really fan of the Beastie Boys except for one weekend during my junior or senior (I can’t remember which) year of high school.
The weekend was a “Just Say No To Drugs” teen counseling weekend which took place in Port Townsend, Washington, a couple of hours away. Hand-picked teens from high schools all over western Washington were spending a weekend to get training on drug and alcohol abuse, prevention and detection counseling. And the music that seemed to be blaring our of every boom box from every corner of the campus was Beastie Boy’s Licensed to Ill.
It’s funny because I had something totally different in mind. I was going to the place where An Officer and a Gentlemen was filmed, so I had Joe Cocker’s Up Where We Belong floating through my head (and Richard Gere too!), but in three days time I learned (and sang) the lyrics to the entire album in between sessions that I don’t ever remember. In fact I didn’t even remember the weekend at all until I heard the song on the plane today!
That ever happen to you?

it always kind of freaks me out when ething triggers a long-forgotten memory. Up Where We Belong was the theme of my junior/senior prom. Man, the gym looked divine!!!!!
Aaaaaah. License to Ill. SO MANY MEMORIES. Just reading your blog made me think of “She’s Crafty” which made me think of me and my HS friends driving around aimlessly and going through a McDonald’s Drive Thru. A totally mundane memory that probably had no business being stored in my brain, but I’m sure we must have been listening to that song at the time–or the memory would not be there at all.
