Human Body Detectives

A benefit to blogging is that I am exposed to products and books that I may never have had a chance to see if I wasn’t part of this wonderful community. To me one of the best things about blogging is the connections that I make, the conversations that I have. As a Savvy Auntie I am always looking for opportunities to review new books for my nieces.

When I read about Human Body Detectives: The Lucky Escape, I was intrigued. I wrote to Dr. Heather Manley and immediately loved her. She had spent time in Geneva in her teens and twenties so we exchanged several emails talking about the experience and my experience of growing up moving around as a military brat. I could tell that she was warm and genuine which is reflected in her well thought out book.

But really, Dr. Manley hasn’t written a book. She has created an experience. Finding a gap on the market for resources for children (her own included) on healthy eating, she decided to create the Human Body Detectives. With an audio CD and workbook that is full of activities, children learn about digestion and how eating good food helps in the process. I also learned a lot by going through the experience myself!

Her daughters, Merrin and Pearl star in the CD and even have blogs of their own on the Human Body Detective website. The site has the blogs, videos and downloaded coloring sheets to supplement the ones that are already in the activity book. She already has the next adventure written and coming out in October, Battle of the Bugs. It’s an experience about the immune system, which considering the previous months of H5N1 news, it’s pretty timely! If The Lucky Escape is any indication, the second book is going to be an equally big hit!

I highly recommend Human Body Detectives: The Lucky Escape for anyone who has children (or knows children!) and who wants to give them an interesting, fun and educational experience written in a way that they will appreciate. Want to see a little more? Here is the book trailer (isn’t it so cool they do book trailers now?).

If you can’t see the embedded file, visit the HBD website, or see the video on YouTube.
