French Women Don’t Sleep Alone

by Andi on July 13, 2009

I just finished reading French Women Don’t Sleep Alone by Jamie Cat Callan. I am obsessed with reading any and all material on French culture, particularly how it relates to relationships, since my husband is French. Any insight into how to figure out how the French mind works, I am going to use it!

Ms. Callan’s book was interesting in that it explored several aspects of dating that I had never read about before. Of course, being married, I am not in dating mode, but I am always fascinated with how other cultures work.

Having lived in France and Switzerland, I did have an opportunity to observe dating patterns, but I never really put two-and-two together. The bottom line is, they don’t date! Like many other European cultures, and from what I understand from Chinese and Indian friends as well, one-on-one dating is just not the norm.

Instead, “dating” occurs in groups. Group dynamics allow you to be more yourself while interacting with people who you feel more comfortable with. You can observe and be observed in more natural surroundings than the artificial environment that an American date put you in.

There was a whole bunch more of interesting bits of information, but I don’t want to give them all away, in case you want to read the book, which if are (a) dating or (b) interested in learning about other cultures, I highly recommend. As an added bonus, there are some really fantastic recipes as well!

Jamie Cat Callan has a website you can check out for more details and she recently did an interview about the book for Your Tango.

And surprise, Ms. Callan found my blog and wants to give a reader a copy of her book! Isn’t that nice!?! All you have to do is leave a comment telling me either (a) your favorite book on another culture, (b) why you are interested in French Women Don’t Sleep Alone or (c) a short summary of your worst date ever! I will select a winner via Random.org on Saturday, July 18th. You have until 11:59 p.s. PST to leave a comment.

And don’t forget the Opie & Dixie giveaway I am still in the middle of for $70 worth of Opie & Dixie pet product. Find details here.

I love any book by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. They always make me want to jump on the 1st plane to Colombia. :)

I have a friend who lived in France for a few years. She lives here in Oklahoma now, but misses France very much. It changed her. She is such a great dresser, too. She has worked in that elusive French style – no need for dozens of outfits – just a few pieces she wears so well. You're really making me want to go to France, Andi. When I was single (newly divorced) I'd read everything I could about French women so I could become more mysterious and snag a great guy. hahaha!

My best friend's mother is a fascinating woman and a high-school French-teacher. I used to spend my lunch breaks in the "French Room", marveling at the Little Prince and eating croissants. She told me that to fully experience french culture I would either have to visit someday or I could purchase a beret, acquire an underage girlfriend, learn to paint, and constantly walk around, shirtless, with a bottle of great wine in my hand and a fresh baguette tucked up in my armpit, shirtless.

She may have been kidding. Needless to say, I'm a big fan of French culture.

I think the winning book contest is only for US inhabitants so I just leave a comment to say something about your post and the book. ^^
I didn't think there was so many books about French culture. And I didn't think that US inhabitants were interested in. ^^ So that's cool.
I'd like to read this book, because that's always interesting to know how foreign people's point of view about your culture. =)

Do you known "Pardon my french ?" I'm reading it and I really like it. That's really funny to see french culture throughout british eyes. =)

I would love to win a copy of Ms Callan's book. I could use help with my love life, because what I am doing now is not working for me.

I would tell you some of my worst date stories, but I don't want to depress anyone. Let's just say girl's were not his 1st choice.
