Weekly Round up week ending June 6

by Andi on June 6, 2009

Missed a few weeks because of vacation, but this week I am back with my weekly round-up of news items that I find interesting.

I am sure everyone saw the sad news about the Air France crash the past week. Always awful, and nothing can be said to ease all those families’ pain. My husband and I fly Air France often and our thoughts are with all of them. It seems the French President Nicholas Sarkozy caught a little flack for saying that there was only a “tiny” chance of any one’s survival (this was right when the news broke out), but I think it might have been misinterpreted in the news. I think he just didn’t want to give false hope. As you can imagine, this story is getting a lot of airtime on the French news, and the individual stories of the passengers are heart-breaking.

The commemoration ceremony marking the 65th anniversary of the D-Day Allied landings in Normandy, otherwise known as D-Day is today, June 6th. This event helped turn the tide of World War II. Obama will be attending representing the U.S. and I sincerely hope that he does not make an ass out of himself like Bush did during the 60th anniversary. (I am pretty sure he won’t.) I was living in France when the 60th took place, and watched the ceremony live. President Bush refused to travel with the other head’s of state on a special bus and was flown in via helicopter. He was late. All the other world leaders were there (and all the French citizens watching on TV) while they waited for him to arrive! I guess it is President Sarzoky who (once again) made an ass of himself. He was so eager for President Obama to attend (Obama had initially said he would be unable to attend when asked about it at the G20) that he forgot to invite the Queen of England, which she did not take well. The British also stormed the beach right next to the Americans that day, so you can see why she might be a little miffed. She is so pissed she is not attending and has sent Charles in her stead. To add insult to injury, Carla Bruni knocked the Queen of England out of her #1 position for “best hat wearer,” so I am thinking she is not keen on the frogs these days! Another mark on the long and turmoiled history between the ancient neighbors.

Why is Seattle interested in San Francisco’s sex scandals? I find it interesting that the Seattle newspaper, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer ran a story on SF sex stories. I am pretty sure they could probably conjure some up of their own!! In fact I did a Google search on that topic, and there are plenty to choose from. Is this city-bashing or just some one’s keen interest in SF history?

I saw Terminator Salvation this past week, after having missed the opening. I found it entertaining. Flaws and hokey stuff throughout, but still entertaining. Except for the fact that it is great to see those types of movies on a big screen, my husband and I both agreed that is was a Netflix movie. It’s funny, if you visit the IMDB page for this movie, there is the pic I have to the right here of Rodrigo Santoro who was definitely NOT in the movie, I know I would have remembered him!

Normally I do an animal story and I had a really great photo, but then when I further researched the photo, there was such a sad story attached to it, I could not bear to mention it. I cannot do sad animal stories. I cannot even watch movies where bad things happen to animals. I can see human-serial-killer, murder, blood and guts, but throw in an animal and I can’t take it!

Very sad what happened to all the people and relatives on this Air France flight. I believe Air France has a good record, yet what I hear now is the opposit. French bashing is back in my neck of the woods, happens every once in a while…

WHY did they not include Rodrigo Santoro!? Hotness aside, he actually is a pretty damn good actor. Grr!!

I hate to sound stupid, but are you French? I was thinking you loved all things French, but I wasn't sure. IT is so sad about the crash.

Hi Jen, nope not French, my husband is. I have always had an affinity for all things European. My grandparents immigrated from the Azores Islands, my family was stationed in Spain, I worked for a European company for many years in which I developed a particular fondness for all things French. Then I was lucky enough to work in Switzerland and loved in France. You can read a little more on my about "page" http://misadventures-with-andi.blogspot.com/2009/04/about-me.html
