Nostalgia

by Andi on May 14, 2009

The interview S.E. Hinton on Nathan Bransford publishing blog brought back such a sense of nostalgia! I loved The Outsiders and read it over and over, making the pages ragged! I memorized the Robert Frost poem, I recited passages, I waxed philosophical on plot points. It was the first book that really explored on a “deep” and I devoured it.

Then came the movie and I was carried away. Who should I have my crush on? They were all so cute..well except Tom Cruise, but it was more his character that turned me off. I loved the innocence of Ralph Macchio and C. Thomas Howell but was attracted to the bad boy-ness of Matt Dillon too. Patrick Swayze was too “old” for me to consider at the time, although I caught with him by the time Dirty Dancing came out!

I was intrigued by the coolness of Diane Lane too. No matter what I see her in she is and will always be Cherry.

S.E. Hinton, a native of Tulsa Oklahoma, is kind of a recluse, all she claims not to be. She has a new book coming out called Some of Tim’s Stories (The Oklahoma Stories & Storytellers Series).

Jen, have you seen her at Reasoner’s grocery store when passing through Tulsa?

I was all about SodaPop…I also worshipped that book and the movie…I remember SO WELL marveling at Hinton’s mastery when Pony Boy got sick at the end…and then started writing the story. I remember thinking, ‘that’s me, I’m going to write like this…’ Great post.

Oh WOW! How on earth could I have totally forgotten about a book that I read until the pages fell out of it?! Thanks for the trip in the Way Back Machine!
