President Sarkozy, why do you make it so hard to love you?

I’ve said it before, I like Nicholas Sarkozy. If I could have voted for him I would have. I think he can turn France around…that is, if his own ego does not get in the way first. Lately he has made it so hard to love. When it comes to discussions with my husband, I am running out of defenses for him. Please Nicholas, help me out, you’re killing me?

I am about to digress, so if you want to know my latest reasons for being unhappy with the French President, you’ll need to move towards the bottom, that way you can get directly to the reason for this post!

When he became President I was thrilled with the cabinet he selected, it was a wonderful mixture of people from opposing parties and minorities, including nearly half women. Now as their popularity grows as his wanes, two key women: Rachida Dati and Rama Yade have fallen out of favor with him. Rama Yade, a black woman in her 30′s is the number two most popular politician in France right now, number one being ex-President Jacques Chirac – that is killing Nicholas!

Ms. Yade is the Secretary of State for Human Rights, not an easy job, but she does it well and with flair. She is not afraid to give her opinion, even if it differs President Sarkozy’s and she is spunky! She works under the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Bernard Kouchner the founder of Doctors without Borders and the peer to Hillary Clinton in the U.S. She could not have a better mentor. However, it looks like she may be shuffled out this summer, which would be a real shame.

Another victim of the impending June ministerial shuffling is Rachida Dati, the French Justice Minister. Her popularity rating is higher than the President’s but not by much. She has put tough reforms in place which have not been met with glee. I think her glamorous photo shoots; the fact that she is very close friends with the ex-Mrs. Sarkoz;, and the fact that she got a lot of press when she was pregnant because she is not married and would not name the father (she still hasn’t); brought too much attention to herself and bruised the executive ego. It’s a shame. I like her toughness, France is in need of reforms and needs tough leaders who are willing to be disliked if it means improvements to systems that are in desperate need to re-structuring.

But now….what has he done now? He has made the mistake of making disparaging remarks about three of his closest allies: the United States, Germany and France. About Obama? Oh. No. You. Didn’t! Dude, get a grip, now is the time to be making nice-nice with Obama, like it or not, the eyes of the world are on him, and you can either be apart of that, using it to France’s advantage, or you can sit out there with your ass hanging in the wind! With the recent factory/CEO kidnappings, you’ll be lucky if you ever get any more American business coming into the country in the first place! There is a lot of old Bush bad blood, that era is over, get on board!

Neither should you be making inane remarks about leaders you need (Germany and Spain) to work together with for European economic reforms, etc. Christ, are you on drugs or something? You need to take a chill pill and get that big fat ego in check! A drowning man that flails in the water is not going to make it. Stay calm, doggy paddle, and get back to shore…France needs you.
