Day 4 of 31DBBB Challenge – Analyze a top blog in your niche

by Andi on April 9, 2009

Today’s assignment is around the topic of analysis. Darren detailed the steps to take to do a competitive analysis, or an observation of your competitive landscape. As I am fairly new to blogging, this is something that I do on a weekly, if not daily basis, maybe not to quite the detail that is suggested in Darren’s post.

I am an extremely observant person, I enjoy people watching, and in the blogosphere that means reading a lot of blogs. I have picked up excellent tips and ideas from other bloggers. Is it important to put my own spin on it, otherwise, why bother? It would just be a re-creation on someone else’s work. I am also the slow and steady type. I don’t believe that I can start from zero to thousands of readers in just a few short months. I like to develop relationships with my readers, which is a key element of community. I don’t want people who just flick in and out, I want my own community who speaks Andi-speak and gets me. Who shares common interests or at least thinks my interests are, well…interesting.

I did spend some time today looking at some personal blogger sites, diarist style, who I know have a lot of traffic. I ran through the list that Darren provided in his post and went through the exercise of examining a few of the questions he asked. I think it is good to do an audit fairly often.

Like everything that you care about, it takes love and maintenance and you cannot take it for granted. You need to constantly evolve and improve. That is true at work, in relationships and in this case in blogging.

I agree with you. Even if they are few, my readers get me and come to see what I wrote because there’s some love flowing around.

I want to cater to their needs first, then I hope my content will attract new readers over time.

You and I seem to agree on this subject too – that’s great!
