Misadventures in Photography

by Andi on February 9, 2009

I decided last Fall that I wanted a camera, well actually a video camera. I was thinking something like the Flip which I could use for video-casting for my business. My husband, being the resident geek and amateur photographer himself, decided it would be better to get a digital camera which had video recording capabilities. I put myself in his trusty hands with the stipulation that it had to be simple. So we got a Canon PowerShot G10 as my husband already has a Canon camera and lens and we would stay in the same “family.”

I have been taking pictures here and there and doing a decent job, but only because my husband set me up with some auto-settings where I couldn’t really screw it up. This past weekend when I was away at the blogging conference, all that was put to test…and I failed miserably, in typical Misadventures with Andi style! I brought my camera to mainly take shots of Jen Lancaster. I adore her books (as I have mentioned countless times) and also one of my blogging buddies, That’s So Missy was unable to attend and I wanted to get some shots for her too.

Little did I know that there would be multiple photo opportunities and that I would be taking more photos than I thought. So without further adieu, here are my highlights:

Here is a photo of Ender Thomas and Nathan Pacheco from the Yanni Voices project (more on that later).

Here is a photo of Chris Mann, a new music artist who is getting ready to release a new album (more on that later).

And here is Jen Lancaster doing her keynotes speech (definitely more on her later).

I’m good huh? The conference photographer and fellow blogger, Secret Agent Mama, tried to take pity on me and helped me a bit, but I was really rather helpless and she had a job to do, so there you go.

In all honesty, I did get a few decent shots, by TOTAL accident, but I did, and I will be sharing them throughout this week with further exploits of my weekend, so stay tuned…

P.S. My husband did give me a few more lessons when I got home…so I will progess!

Andi,
How funny, my husband did not want me to get a Flip either (must be something in their French genes).
I bought one anyway for my birthday and I love it! (I sent you one of the videos I made and that I posted on my Facebook fan page).
As for the photos, I took a class with Robin Allen (from LWL) and I am taking great photos now.

I have the G9 and I love it. I think you need to practice with the camera and the settings and you will end up with some great shots. It took me a minute to get used to shooting with the camera. The lighting in the ballroom was not the best either. It was great meeting you at Blissdom. You have given me an idea for creating a post for shooting with the G9 and G10.

Well not only do we love Jen Lancaster, but we also share the same photo-taking abilities! I have the same problem with my camera. Most of the pictures I took at my sister’s PhD ceremony turned out blurry.

I can’t wait to see more pics and read your updates! :)

Hee hee! But, andi, you were trying HARD to make that camera work for you! So you get points for that! Can’t wait to see the rest of them! Too bad you didn’t get any of the Nashville Swing Dancers! ;)

LOL! Mine are about on par-I so wish the lighting was brighter when all the hotties were up-my cam wanted to use a flash, which didn’t reach the subjects, and if I tried not use the light as is with a longer exposure it looked like I was photographing possessed people. *sigh*
