I am currently out to sea so I have prepared a short story for you to enjoy in my absence.
“Excuse me John. I need to run to the ladies room before our entrees arrive. Be right back.”
“Sure thing Jane.”
It was crowded tonight at Chez Paul’s. It had been a while since Jane had been there. She had actually avoided it for a year after her break-up with Matt. She had recently returned because the food was just so darned good.
As she made her way through the tables towards the restroom she thought about the dinner selection she had made. Israeli couscous with chanterelle mushrooms, it was going to be divine. It was fall so mushroom season was in full swing. The fresh woodiness of the chanterelles were just perfect with the subtle tasting couscous.
“Oh crap. Please, please, please. Let it not be Matt. Let it not be Matt.” Jane muttered to herself as she approached the last table before the restrooms.
“It is him. And that must be his new wife. Of all the nights. It’s only the second date with John, why did it have to be tonight. Or why at all?”
“Oh no, he’s seen me. What am I going to do? Ok, just be cool. You are not bitter. No you are not! Of course it is only natural that after seven months of marriage after five years together that he would ‘not feel like being married anymore, that it was a mistake’ and of course it is only natural that after only being divorced six months he was engaged and just got married. Yeah, that makes sense.”
“Hello Matt,” Jane purred through her gritted teeth. “What a surprise. I can’t believe we are both here on the same night, I thought with you moving into a different neighborhood this would be out of your way.”
“Well you know the food is just so good here, I couldn’t resist.” Answered Matt. “Let me introduce you to my wife.”
“Jessica isn’t it?” Jane inquired already knowing the answer.
“That’s right. And who are you?” wife Number Two asked.
Oh this was going to be fun.
“I’m Jane.”
“Oh,” saying everything in that one word.
“Yes, I am the reason that Matt swore off marriage forever.” Jane reminded her.
“Well, I guess it wasn’t forever,” Jessica remarked.
“Apparently not. Well enjoy your desserts.” Jane said as she spun around to head back to John.
“Damn. I forgot I had to go the bathroom. I will run next door to the Starbucks. There is no way in hell I am going back there.”
As Jane passed the table that she was occupying with her date, a confused John watched after her as she exited the restaurant and turned left. A few minutes later, Jane returned with two Starbucks cups, sat down and said, “I really hate the coffee here.”
