I was reading entries this morning on Twitter when someone chimed in about a blog entry written on the topic of “what were you doing 10 years ago today”. She asked other people to comment about what they were up to on October 29, 1998. I took a moment to contemplate this and was immediately surprised to realize where I was in my life 10 years ago. My life has changed so much since that time I barely recognize myself.
I am not a person who likes to dwell on the past, in fact I abhor it. I live in the present and try to make every day worthwhile. Live for today. I think that this is why Tim Ferriss’s keynote speech at the conference I was at last week was interesting to me, and why I ultimately picked up his book (The 4-Hour Workweek). One of his main guiding principles is to NOT defer retirement, to have frequent mini-retirements and enjoy life during your life. Not just at the end when you may be too old or not well enough to actually profit from your years of hard work. Basically, live for today!
I am thankful for all the things that have happened to me in the last 10 years, they make me the person I am today. But I prefer to look forward to the next 10. So I am reversing the question: Where will I be 10 years from today, on October 29, 2018?
- I will have left the corporate environment on my own terms after a successful career.
- I will be running my own business. (Not full-time because I built it up enough to hire staff.)
- I will have published at least one of my novels.
- I will have gone through the Panama Canal.
- I will have visited Tuscany and the Amalfi Coast.
- I will have been to Australia or New Zealand.
- I will have had my nieces stay with my husband and I at least once for a week.
- Our house will be paid off. At least one other will have been purchased.
- I will have mastered one great meal (beginning to end) to impress my husband.
- I will not regret anything over the past 10 years (2008-2018)
What about you? Think about it and leave your comments.
